Creating Character: The Equine Sculpture

Horse head sculpture on a stand

The equine sculpture that has the ability to not only recreate a true horse head, but oozes character & captures every visitor, yet it is still subtle if you choose it to be – Our Horse Head Sculpture.

One of our favourite equine sculptures we create; the variety of styles & finishes we have are never ending -they are also available in an array of sizes to suit!

Each Horse Head starts out with the pattern design, we currently use the half-moon pieces to create these sculptures, but we have the ability to also to customize any pattern to suit each client, so everyone can have their very own custom made Horse Head!

Once we have all the pieces cut out & ready to go – its straight to the studio floor where the Horse Head mould is carefully placed.

We create the Horse Head sculptures of all sizes in two halves enabling us to get the perfect horse head shape, once both sides are made separately, we joint hem together, using manpower, tools & machines to lift the weight of them.

Once all together we can add in the eyes, ears & nostrils.

Each one of these parts are hand bent using 8mm mild steel bar to capture the life of the animal.

Placement of the finer details re so important & it’s a complete team effort from all sides when we are placing especially the ears – each ear is angled to really give the horse sculpture that thoughtful look – but by turning them we can add in any form of mood, we can even make them look angry!

SO, this part is so important that we get it right!

This is when we also add on our long “floating tubes” which are effectively the tubes that hold them on top of the plinths, they are also made from mild steel but in a tubular form, hidden carefully at the base of the horses’ muzzles.

These floating tubes are the illumination kit holders & protectors when we install the sculptures, they also slot directly on the box frame plinth that the heads are placed on for stability, securing & structure.

Once the two halves are made, we then place them together carefully adding in any further pieces to make the Horse Head complete.

We offer our Horse Head sculptures in a Rustic patina finish, which we encourage with a solution at the Elliott of London studio to produce some of the most stunning warm oranges & browns tones.

This is where the sculpture creating process finishes for the Rustic Patina Horse Head’s.

They are simply oozing with natural tones, textures & feel – ready for any outdoor area, spaces, gardens, or events!

For any other finish options, we take the spheres to be Hot Zinc Galvanised finish to protect from weathering & self-corrosion.

The Hot Zinc Galvanised finish is the next process & gives a subtle silvery grey finish which is also suitable for many.

The sculptures are taken up to our Galvanising team, where they undergo a whole host of treatments in huge tanks, which we they offer to us on 24hr service!

Once hot zinc galvanised & re palleted for us to collected – its back to the studio so we can fettle them up & get the ready for installation or on to the nest process we provide!

So if the Hot Zinc Galvanised finish isn’t quite right for the you we offer fully hand painted finish, which include our famous Verdigris & Gold, Matte Black & Copper, then there is even an option for solid colour powered coating which we can match up to any RAL colour!

The outer paint is a wax based paint which is painted on by one of the team & a then internal paint is a metallic based paint which is also hand painted on – the time for each size horse head hand painting varies depending on the surface area but it involves one of the team not only popping their hand within the sculpture but we also have to get inside it to get the perfect finish each & every time!

 Garden Sculpture

If you’re looking for a more luxurious Horse Head then the Bronze Piece Horse Head is for you! The method is entirely the same except we use the finest bronze sheet to cut the pieces from rather than mild steel. The process takes a lot longer to put together due to the heat created when we are adding each piece.

Once all pieced together the patina is chosen & we get to work on the acid wash, waxing & polishing to achieve the most desirable finishes that ooze Verdigris, blue & golden tones.
